From Farm to Jar
In 2010 SoFresh farms formally began its journey to, “promote health through the regenerative cultivation and delivery of exceptional quality cannabis”. Owners Michelle and Tyson Haworth first joined the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program as Patient and Grower after Michelle’s second back surgery a few years earlier.
Unsatisfied with physicians’ constant promotion and wide acceptance of harmful opiate based prescription drugs, SoFresh seeks to cultivate and provide a more socially and environmentally healthy alternative. Their small family farm, located in the agriculturally rich North Willamette Valley, has established and maintained industry leading quality, social and environmental standards.
All SoFresh products are cultivated using minimal energy inputs; compostable and recyclable materials are given top priority. Waste is food, rain and de-humidification water is captured and stored on-site then used as the farm’s primary irrigation source. Waste indoor cultivation heat is captured to provide heat for greenhouses. Worm castings and compost combine with locally sourced nutrients and no-till cultivation techniques to ensure mineral balance and biologically thriving soil.
Plant positive IPM programs are a key protocol, the farm relies on predatory pests, fungi and nematodes for the pest management blueprint. 100% locally owned and operated, SoFresh chooses to invest in coworker education, pay a living wage, provide healthcare benefits and retirement savings for its employees while also giving back to the local community.
SoFresh Cultivation Methods
The SoFresh indoor growing area uses a closed-loop system with low-till raised beds. They prefer to use double ended high-pressure sodium lights (HPS) but are always experimenting with new technology to promote increases in quality and yield while using less energy. The SoFresh standard is to create exceptional quality cannabis with the most efficient and bio-friendly systems possible.
Currently SoFresh utilizes a hybrid/closed-loop system with supplemental CO2, HVAC and fresh-air ventilation. During winter when it is cold outside the farmers use intake and exhaust instead of using air-conditioning to cool the room when the lights are on. This not only saves power but also replenishes the CO2 naturally. During the hot summer months, A/C is used to keep the temperature below 85 degrees which is important for keeping the more volatile terpenes from evaporating before they can be enjoyed.
The favored growing environment at SoFresh farms is the greenhouse. There are a couple of greenhouses that are used to cultivate vegative and flowering plants. The light assist/light deprivation greenhouse produces the highest quality flowers available on the market while using less energy than a standard indoor room. There is something magical about the sun that plants prefer over only HPS or LED lights.
Tyson understands that full spectrum photo-biology plays an important part in the plants development and they have discovered plants that have the benefit of the sun and consistent HPS light when the sun doesn’t shine consistently produce the highest quality flowers at SoFresh farm.”
SoFresh farms also cultivates premium sun-grown flower that ripens under the September and October sun. These cultivars are usually available in the winter and early spring. The long Oregon summer days grow big plants and create dense, potent flowers known for their vibrant dark colors, rich smell and intense flavors. To help protect SoFresh’s sun grown cannabis from the mold creating and terpene robbing rain and dew that is often present in the Pacific Northwest in the fall. Farm hands take the time to carefully thin and train the plants before building hoop houses over the flower for the last 4 to 6 weeks of ripening.
Caring for Living Soil
SoFresh farms raised beds stand about two feet high on native soil and are composed of a mixture of peat moss, perlite/bio-char, worm castings and compost as well as small amounts of other balanced nutrients. The goal is to create a synergy between the plants and the soil. SoFresh Farms believes in a “living soil” by creating an environment that is perfect for both beneficial microbiological life and Cannabis plants. Their methods begin with inoculating the plants with mycorrhizae in the vegetative stage and continuously through the beginning of the flowering cycle. Tyson uses a combination of different organic methods to feed the plants on his farm. Among them, they brew their own teas and feed the soil where the beneficial bacteria break it down and make food for the plants.
The farm is regularly featured in magazine and news articles for the company’s leading social, environmental and political practices. In July of 2014 sofresh was among Oregon’s first batch of Clean Green Certified farms, a national cannabis industry version of USDA Organic certification. SoFresh continues to lead the way in developing regenerative farming systems focused on creating clean healthy cannabis while doing good for the local environment, people and economy.

Each batch of SoFresh flower is hand selected by the founders of Kind Leaf to ensure the best representation of sustainably farmed flower cultivated by SoFresh Farms is available on the shelves at Kind Leaf in Pendleton, Oregon.
