Dr. Jolly’s was founded by two brothers. The younger brother, known as “Jolly”, is a talented and experienced cultivator and purveyor of fine herbs. As a patient and a grower, Jolly has been cultivating medical cannabis for patients in the local Bend area since 2007. He is an energetic, charismatic, hard-working farmer who takes great pride in his craft. The older brother, known as “Doctor”, is a former science journal editor and a materials engineer. He came to Bend in 2013 to join with his brother to create the brand, “Dr. Jolly’s.”
After dutifully harvesting and trimming flower, it is graded and readied for market. Anything less than A-grade tops is sent to the processing lab for extraction. A large majority of flower cultivated at the farm is grown for processing. Dr. Jolly’s specializes in high-terpene live resins, shatters and Diamond production.
Did you know? Diamonds are considered a connoisseur grade product. Diamonds are derived from fresh frozen plant or whole buds, rather than trim. To create these crystals, Producers extract material then introduce them to a specialized pressurized chamber, where a separation occurs between Cannabinoids and Terpenes. Terpenes rise to the top and Cannabinoids crystals form at the bottom of the chamber.
Dr. Jolly’s has provided the marketplace with a hydrocarbon derived version of edible Cannabis oil which is also known as FECO (Full-Extract Cannabis oil) or RSO (Rick Simpson Oil). Most edible cannabis oils are processed with ethanol as the solvent, this yields the very recognizable black terry cannabis oils. Hydrocarbon derived cannabis oils are generally lighter in color and thicker in consistency. Having less plant matter, chlorophyll and other compounds, the cannabinoid content on these oils can be much higher.
Fractionated coconut oil or MCT tinctures are also created by the Dr. Jolly’s team. There are several varities that can be found in Oregon, High-CBD, High-THC, Indica, Sativa and Hybrid as well as a few mixed ration concoctions. Look for thier blue UV resistant bottles with the bright orange label when you are perusing tinctures.
Dr. Jolly’s has partnered Kind Leaf to be the exclusive provider of their boutique quality and connoisseur grade products in Pendleton, Oregon. In 2010 SoFresh farms formally began its journey to, “promote health through the regenerative cultivation and delivery of exceptional quality cannabis”. Owners Michelle and Tyson Haworth first joined the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program as Patient and Grower after Michelle’s second back surgery a few years earlier.
Unsatisfied with physicians’ constant promotion and wide acceptance of harmful opiate based prescription drugs, SoFresh seeks to cultivate and provide a more socially and environmentally healthy alternative. Their small family farm, located in the agriculturally rich North Willamette Valley, has established and maintained industry leading quality, social and environmental standards.
All SoFresh products are cultivated using minimal energy inputs; compostable and recyclable materials are given top priority. Waste is food, rain and de-humidification water is captured and stored on-site then used as the farm’s primary irrigation source. Waste indoor cultivation heat is captured to provide heat for greenhouses. Worm castings and compost combine with locally sourced nutrients and no-till cultivation techniques to ensure mineral balance and biologically thriving soil.
Plant positive IPM programs are a key protocol, the farm relies on predatory pests, fungi and nematodes for the pest management blueprint. 100% locally owned and operated, SoFresh chooses to invest in coworker education, pay a living wage, provide healthcare benefits and retirement savings for its employees while also giving back to the local community.
SoFresh Cultivation Methods
Indoor Cultivation The SoFresh indoor growing area uses a closed-loop system with low-till raised beds. They prefer to use double ended high-pressure sodium lights (HPS) but are always experimenting with new technology to promote increases in quality and yield while using less energy. The SoFresh standard is to create exceptional quality cannabis with the most efficient and bio-friendly systems possible.
Currently SoFresh utilizes a hybrid/closed-loop system with supplemental CO2, HVAC and fresh-air ventilation. During winter when it is cold outside the farmers use intake and exhaust instead of using air-conditioning to cool the room when the lights are on. This not only saves power but also replenishes the CO2 naturally. During the hot summer months, A/C is used to keep the temperature below 85 degrees which is important for keeping the more volatile terpenes from evaporating before they can be enjoyed.
Growing Greenhouse The favored growing environment at SoFresh farms is the greenhouse. There are a couple of greenhouses that are used to cultivate vegative and flowering plants. The light assist/light deprivation greenhouse produces the highest quality flowers available on the market while using less energy than a standard indoor room. There is something magical about the sun that plants prefer over only HPS or LED lights.
Tyson understands that full spectrum photo-biology plays an important part in the plants development and they have discovered plants that have the benefit of the sun and consistent HPS light when the sun doesn’t shine consistently produce the highest quality flowers at SoFresh farm.”
Sungrown Plants SoFresh farms also cultivates premium sun-grown flower that ripens under the September and October sun. These cultivars are usually available in the winter and early spring. The long Oregon summer days grow big plants and create dense, potent flowers known for their vibrant dark colors, rich smell and intense flavors. To help protect SoFresh’s sun grown cannabis from the mold creating and terpene robbing rain and dew that is often present in the Pacific Northwest in the fall. Farm hands take the time to carefully thin and train the plants before building hoop houses over the flower for the last 4 to 6 weeks of ripening.
Caring for Living Soil SoFresh farms raised beds stand about two feet high on native soil and are composed of a mixture of peat moss, perlite/bio-char, worm castings and compost as well as small amounts of other balanced nutrients. The goal is to create a synergy between the plants and the soil. SoFresh Farms believes in a “living soil” by creating an environment that is perfect for both beneficial microbiological life and Cannabis plants. Their methods begin with inoculating the plants with mycorrhizae in the vegetative stage and continuously through the beginning of the flowering cycle. Tyson uses a combination of different organic methods to feed the plants on his farm. Among them, they brew their own teas and feed the soil where the beneficial bacteria break it down and make food for the plants.
The farm is regularly featured in magazine and news articles for the company’s leading social, environmental and political practices. In July of 2014 sofresh was among Oregon’s first batch of Clean Green Certified farms, a national cannabis industry version of USDA Organic certification. SoFresh continues to lead the way in developing regenerative farming systems focused on creating clean healthy cannabis while doing good for the local environment, people and economy.

Select products with quality ingredients, best practice is to avoid corn syrup, artificial additives, thinning agents or artificial preservatives, even though products on the market can contain them. An “appellation” is a legally defined and protected geographical indication found on a wine label. The appellation indicates the wine’s origin and, often dictates a standard of quality. They are found in almost every wine growing region in the world. There are many other food products, such as cheese and teas, which also have appellations.
One man’s constant is another man’s variable.

During the latter years of cannabis prohibition areas such as the Emerald Triangle and Southern Oregon became known for distinctive black market cannabis. Many connoisseurs could begin to rely on a certain quality when making a purchase from these regions. During the onset of medical cannabis programs, many other regions began cultivation and new recognized areas began to appear on the market. Oregon has world-famous cannabis, sought out by epicureans and aficionados much in the same way Oregon wine and micro-brews are.
Here in Oregon, we have an inimitable climate. Various regions of this state possess more than one climate type, also known as micro-climates. Each climate type will cause a strain to express its genetics differently, so strains cultivated across the state have wildly different representations depending on the region. Cannabis grown here can benefit from defining appellations or regions. Which in turn would benefit the small or craft cannabis farms.
Southern Oregon has many compact regions that are becoming well-known in dispensaries across the state such as Rogue Valley and Applegate Valley. These regions have a Mediterranean type of climate which provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of most any strain, it is known that long-flowering tropical sativas with Thai or Hawaiian lineage fare the best in these regions when compared other Oregon regions.
The coastal range has a very cool climate, and is an area that is primarily indoor farms due to the cold and moist climate many of the fast flowering sedative Indica varietals are chosen here. The air is cool enough to cause purpling of the leaves and buds of the plant; the flower hailing from this region of has a wide range of colors.
The Willamette Valley is moist as well, but with a much warmer climate and very fertile soils. This area shows a great number of indoor as well as greenhouse and light deprivation operations. Many strains cultivated here are hybridized due to breeding and trading. This is the temperate area stretching from Eugene to northeast Portland.
Central Oregon sees many climates each week. The weather is ever changing so many choose to work with Afghani and Mazari based Indica varietals. Brave and highly experienced central Oregon farmers choose Sativa and Sativa dominant hybrids as the sun here is long and full, as is the summer, despite sometimes harsh weather changes.
Eastern Oregon is high desert but brushed right up against the Blue mountains. The sun is hot and the winds are strong. Winter comes fast- and once the cold comes to Eastern Oregon it is very cold and sometimes lasts until late May. The unpredictable harshness as well as long hours of direct sun, Kush strains are favored here for shorter flowering times and stronger branches.
Learn more about your cannabis growing region by speaking to your local knowledgeable budtenders and attending cannabis focused conventions or seminars. Take notes on your favorite strains, ask what company cultivated your flower and where; many people begin to recognize specific traits, various flavors and aromas, flower structures and find that they have a commonly preferred region.
Finding which regions you enjoy the most can provide for a great opportunity for discovery and learning as well as help expedite your dispensary visit.
In many instances, a negative initial experience may be enough for someone to tragically banish cannabis from their life forever. Typically the reason for doing so has to do with the anxious, uncomfortable and even paranoia inducing side effects associated with consumption of high levels of THC; but what first-timers might not realize is there are ways to minimize unpleasant feelings and experiences.
For novices, lightweights and low-tolerance consumers, Kind Leaf has a recommendation for finding that perfect first-time experience.
Unlike THC, CBD is a relatively non-psychoactive compound with both relaxing and medicinal properties. CBD can actually help mitigate and even counteract THC associated anxiety, so it’s a perfect starting point for new users.
You’ll often find strains that contain equal parts THC and CBD, but some contain almost no THC at all. Beginning your journey with a CBD rich strain can assist in building the tolerance needed for individuals to experience more potent strains and cannabis infused products. Remember to start low and go slow if you are not a regular cannabis consumer.
